GREEN CITIES EUROPE

AWARD 2020

WINNER 2020: BERINGEN MINE

In July 2020, the best green projects in 7 countries were selected for the Green Cities for a sustainable Europe Award. An international professional jury then assessed these projects and selected the best project. December 3rd 2020, the winning project was announced in an online talk show.

BERINGEN MINE: From black coal to green gem

The Beringen mine site comprises 100,000 m² of existing building heritage. This makes it the largest industrial heritage site in Flanders and unique in Europe. Of all the other mine sites in Limburg, it is the only one where the industrial heart of the mine has been preserved. The mine site is located in the small-town area of the third largest city in Limburg and at the foot of two slag heaps. Under the name be-MINE, the site has now been redeveloped as a tourist/recreational project. Urban functions such as living, working and shopping are thereby interwoven in a balanced way. With the master plan for the redevelopment of 32 hectares of mining land, the historic site has been given a dignified, valuable and contemporary interpretation.
